Subscription Pricing & Free Trials for In-App Purchases

Everything you need to know about pricing and trial limitations across each app store platform

App stores have their own rules when it comes to subscription pricing and free trial durations, and they're different from what you can set on your Uscreen web store.

ℹ️ INFO: This article covers the pricing ranges, trial options, and key limitations for each supported platform so you can plan your in-app offerings accordingly.

Web vs. In-App Subscriptions

On your Uscreen web store, you have full flexibility over pricing and trial lengths. In-app subscriptions are a different story, as each app marketplace sets its own rules, and changes go through their review process, not your dashboard.

📝 NOTE: The Billing Period and Trial Period fields on any subscription plan linked to an OTT app will be greyed out in your Admin Area. These settings are controlled by the app stores, not your Uscreen dashboard. To make changes, you'll need to submit an app update request.

Here's what applies across all platforms:

  • Changes don't carry over automatically: updating pricing or trial durations on your web subscription will not affect the in-app version. App store pricing must be updated separately through each platform.

  • Changes take time: price and trial updates can take up to 48 hours to process on Uscreen's end, plus additional time for app store review and approval, which can take several days depending on the platform. Plan ahead and flag any changes to your CSM or App Setup Specialist with as much lead time as possible.

  • Price changes affect all subscribers: when you change an in-app subscription price, both current and future subscribers will see the new price. Existing subscribers will be prompted to consent to the change or cancel. (Exception: Roku locks subscribers into their original pricing; see the Roku section below.)

  • Don't price in-app higher than web to offset revenue share: while technically possible, pricing your in-app subscription higher than your web subscription can result in app store rejection during review. Speak to your CSM before making this decision.

💡 TIP: If you're unsure how any of these guidelines apply to your specific setup, reach out to your Customer Success Manager or App Setup Specialist, and they'll guide you through the best approach for your store.

Platform Pricing & Trial Limits

Jump to a specific platform:

Google

Free Trials

Free trial durations can be set anywhere between 3 and 999 days.

Subscription Pricing

You can set any price for your Google Play in-app subscription, but there is a maximum price limit of $400 USD that applies to all subscription terms (both monthly and annual).

  • For price limits in other currencies: Google Play Currency Price Limits

  • Need prices in currencies other than your default? Let your App Setup Specialist know, and we can manually convert pricing to override conversion rates for specific regions.

ℹ️ INFO: Need to go above $400 USD? You can request expanded price points directly from Google, and you'll need your developer account ID and your app's package ID (e.g., tv.uscreen.yourapp).

Apple

Free Trials

Apple requires you to choose from a fixed set of trial durations:

3 Days, 1 Week, 2 Weeks, 1 Month, 2 Months, 3 Months, 6 Months, or 1 Year

📝 NOTE: Apple doesn't support custom day counts like "30 days." A 1 Month trial runs from the subscription date to the same date the following month. For example, a February 14th start date means the trial ends, and billing begins on March 14th.

Subscription Pricing

Apple uses a predetermined price tier system, where you select from a dropdown of fixed price options rather than entering a custom amount. Price increments expand as prices increase.

ℹ️ INFO: Need higher price points (up to $9,999)? Contact Apple as the Account Holder with a justified reason.

📝 NOTE: Unlike other platforms, Roku locks existing subscribers into their original pricing. If you increase your subscription price, current Roku subscribers will continue paying their original rate, and only new subscribers will see the updated price.

If you need pricing in a non-USD currency, we'll select the closest USD equivalent, and Roku will apply a rough conversion for each region.

FAQs

Why can't I edit the Billing Period or Trial Period on my subscription plan?

If your plan is linked to an OTT app, these fields will be greyed out in the Admin Area. They're controlled by the app stores, not your Uscreen dashboard. To make changes, submit an app update request. 🔗 Learn more about Requesting an App Update

Will changing my web subscription price affect my in-app subscription?

No, web and in-app subscriptions are managed independently. Changes to your web pricing will not carry over to your app store subscriptions. You'll need to submit an app update request to change in-app pricing.

How long do app pricing changes take?

Up to 48 hours on Uscreen's end, plus additional time for app store review and approval, which can take several days depending on the platform. Always plan ahead and coordinate with your CSM or App Setup Specialist well in advance.

Can I set a price higher in-app than on the web?

Technically, yes, but this can lead to app store rejection in some cases. Reach out to your CSM before making this decision.

What happens to existing subscribers if I change my in-app price?

For most platforms, existing subscribers will be notified of the price change and asked to consent or cancel. The exception is Roku, where existing subscribers are locked into their original price.
