Subscriptions: Complete Guide

Secure predictable revenue and provide continuous content access with a recurring subscription model

What are Subscriptions?

Subscriptions let you offer your content through a recurring payment model, giving your members ongoing access to your library while creating predictable revenue for your business.

You can create multiple plans at different price points, assign content to each one, and control who can see them on your storefront.

Create Your Subscription

  1. Navigate to Subscriptions

  2. Click New Plan

  3. Enter the basic information:

    • Title: choose a clear, concise name (keep in mind how it'll look alongside other plans on your Join Us page)

    • Description: explain what subscribers will get

    • Image (Thumbnail): add a thumbnail to represent the plan (optional)

  4. Set pricing and billing:

    • Price: the amount charged per billing cycle

    • Billing Period: Monthly, Quarterly, Semi-Annual, or Yearly

  5. Configure additional options:

    • Free Trial: set a trial duration (optional)

    • Pause Feature: let subscribers pause instead of canceling

  6. Set availability: Public or Private

  7. Click Save

πŸ“ NOTE: If this plan is linked to an OTT app, the Billing Period and Trial Period fields will be greyed out. These settings are controlled by the app stores, not your dashboard. To make changes, you'll need to submit an app update request.

πŸ’‘ TIP: When naming (title) your subscriptions, keep in mind how they'll appear alongside other plans. Use consistent, easy-to-understand naming conventions.

Subscription Thumbnails

We recommend using custom thumbnails to draw attention to your preferred plans.

For example, adding a "Best Value" badge to your Annual Plan's thumbnail is a subtle but effective way to nudge members toward it.

Add a Free Trial

Free trials can significantly increase conversions by letting potential subscribers experience your content before committing.

  1. When creating or editing a plan, find the Trial Period section

  2. Enter the number of trial days

  3. Click Save

ℹ️ INFO: Members only get one free trial, even if they switch plans or cancel and resubscribe. If a member switches plans while on a trial, the trial ends immediately.

Assign Content to the Subscription

You can assign content to a plan in a few different ways, depending on how much you need to do.

Individual Assignment

Best for assigning a single video or collection at a time.

  1. Navigate to Content > Videos or Collections

  2. Click on the content you want to assign and select Edit

  3. Scroll to the Subscription & Pricing section

  4. Select your plan from the dropdown

  5. Click Save Changes

Bulk Assignment

Best for assigning a large number of videos or collections at once.

  1. Navigate to Content > Videos or Collections

  2. Use the checkboxes to select the content you want to assign

  3. Click Add to Plans

  4. Select the plan(s) from the modal

  5. Click Save Plans

Build Additional Subscriptions

Once your first plan is set up, the fastest way to create additional ones is by duplicating it, where you don't need to start from scratch.

  1. Navigate to Subscriptions

  2. Click the ellipsis (...) next to the plan you want to build on

  3. Select Duplicate

  4. Edit the duplicate: update the title, description, price, and billing period

  5. Add any content that should be exclusive to this new plan

  6. Click Save

πŸ’‘ TIP: Duplicating a plan carries over all of its assigned content, so you only need to add what's new rather than reassigning everything from scratch. This makes it the most efficient way to build tiered plans; start from your lowest tier and work up.

Set the Availability of the Subscription

When creating or editing a plan, you can set its availability to Public or Private.

Public plans are visible to everyone on your storefront's Join Us page and show up when members try to access gated content.

Private plans are hidden from your storefront and only accessible via a direct link you share. This is useful for special offers, legacy pricing, exclusive groups, or phasing out old plans without disrupting existing subscribers.

To share a private plan's link:

  1. Navigate to Subscriptions

  2. Click the ellipsis (...) next to the plan

  3. Select Copy Link and share it with your chosen audience

πŸ’‘ TIP: Use private plans to test new pricing with a smaller group before rolling changes out to your public offerings.

In-App Subscriptions

If you have Uscreen apps, in-app subscriptions need to be set up separately from your web plans. Here's why:

  • Platform-Specific Management: Web plan changes take effect instantly from your dashboard. App store subscriptions go through a review process that can take several days, so keeping them separate lets you manage each platform independently without delays.

  • Operational Flexibility: Having separate plans means you can experiment with web pricing, run promotions, or make quick adjustments without waiting on app store approval every time.

  • Better Insights: Separate plans make it easy to track where your subscribers are coming from and compare performance between web and app.

πŸ’‘ TIP: Make sure the plan you submit for in-app use includes access to your premium content, as in-app subscribers should typically get your highest tier of access.

Creating a Plan for In-App Use

  1. Navigate to Subscriptions

  2. Create a new plan or duplicate an existing one

  3. Set availability to Private

  4. Click Save

  5. Submit an app update request and specify which plan(s) you want to offer in your app

πŸ“ NOTE: Changes to in-app subscriptions cannot be made directly from your Admin Area and always require an app update request.

Manage Existing Subscriptions

Edit a Subscription Plan

  1. Navigate to Subscriptions

  2. Click the ellipsis (...) next to the plan you want to edit

  3. Select Edit, make your changes, and click Save

When you save changes to a plan with app components, a confirmation dialog will appear to ensure you understand that your changes will only apply to the web version of the plan.

πŸ“ NOTE: If the plan has app-related pricing, you'll also see an alert banner reminding you that app changes must be handled separately via an app update request.

Delete a Subscription Plan

Before deleting, keep in mind:

  • All subscribers on that plan will immediately lose access to its content

  • Invoices linked to the deleted plan will no longer be filterable on the Sales page

⚠️ WARNING: Deleting a subscription will permanently remove it from the system and instantly revoke access to all of its subscribers. If you're unsure whether to delete or edit a plan, consider using the Private setting to temporarily hide it instead.

  1. Navigate to Subscriptions

  2. Click the ellipsis (...) next to the plan

  3. Select Delete and confirm

πŸ“ NOTE: Subscription plans tied to apps cannot be deleted via the Admin Area. Please reach out to ott@uscreen.tv for assistance.

FAQs

Can I offer different pricing tiers?

Yes, you can create as many plans as you need at different price points and content access levels. The most efficient way to build them is by duplicating an existing plan, which carries over all assigned content. πŸ”— Learn more about Creating Tiered Subscription Plans

Can I see what content is assigned to a plan without going through each video?

Yes! Each plan page now has a Content section showing a summary of assigned videos and collections. Click Manage Content from the plan page to view the full list and make changes in bulk.

How do I adjust prices for existing subscribers?

Do marketing features like Reduce Churn or Try Again for Free work with multiple plans?

Yes, these features work across all subscription plans.

Can I offer a $0 subscription?

No, Uscreen doesn't support $0 subscriptions. For free content, use Free Access Offers instead.

Can I edit app pricing directly from the subscription form?

No. If a plan includes app-related pricing, changes must go through an app update request via the Mobile & TV Apps page.

What happens if I delete a plan that has active subscribers?

All subscribers on that plan lose access immediately. If you're phasing out a plan, consider setting it to Private first so no new members can join, while existing subscribers keep their access until their billing period ends.
