Migrating Your Domain To Our New Servers

Learn about confirming your domain ownership for migrating to our upgraded Servers

Updated over a month ago

Migrating your domain is an essential process to ensure your Uscreen website functions smoothly on our new infrastructure. Below are two methods you can use to migrate your domain: a Quick Migration (with potential downtime) and a No Downtime Migration option.

👉 If your site is down and experiencing an outage, or if you don't mind a quick downtime for your site, follow our Quick Migration Plan.

👉If your site is not offline or if you would like to migrate without downtime, follow our No Downtime Migration Plan.

How Do I Know If I Need to Migrate?

To simplify the process, we’ll be adding a banner to your Uscreen dashboard if your domain requires migration. Here’s how to check if you need to take action:

  • Check your dashboard: A banner notification will appear on your Uscreen Dashboard, prompting you to migrate if your domain is still using the old server infrastructure.

  • Don't see the banner? If you don’t see a banner, your domain is already on our new servers, and no action is required.

  • If you see the banner, please take action before December 1st, 2024.

Why do I need to migrate servers?

We have upgraded our server infrastructure to provide enhanced performance, security, and reliability. To take advantage of these improvements, you’ll need to update your domain's DNS settings to point to our new servers.

Failing to migrate your domain may result in degraded performance or your site becoming inaccessible.

Quick Migration Plan

This is the fastest way to move your domain, but it may result in a couple of hours of downtime as your new DNS settings propagate. Choose this option if downtime is acceptable for your business. You can even do this during the evening when your traffic might be lower.

Steps for Quick Migration:

  1. Go to your Domain Settings.

  2. Click "Use a different domain" and select a Uscreen subdomain.

  3. Choose a temporary Uscreen Subdomain. Use your Business name for simplicity.

  4. Repeat the process, but this time select "Custom domain" to generate a new set of DNS records.

  5. Access Your Domain Registrar - Log into your domain registrar (e.g., GoDaddy, Namecheap, etc.).

  6. Update Your DNS Records

    • Locate your current DNS settings (often under DNS management or similar).

    • Update or remove your old Uscreen DNS records and replace with the following records:

  7. Save Your Changes
Ensure that you've saved all changes in your registrar's DNS management section.

  8. Wait for DNS Propagation

    • DNS changes can take anywhere from a few minutes to 48 hours to propagate globally. It typically takes about 30-60 minutes. During this period, users may experience downtime or may be unable to access your site.

    • To monitor the DNS propagation, you can use a tool like WhatsMyDNS.net.

  9. Add your custom domain to Uscreen

    • Once propagation is complete, Click on Connect to add your domain to Uscreen

  10. Wait for a new SSL Certificate

    • Once you've successfully added your domain to Uscreen again, you'll see SSL in Progress. This process takes about 30-60 minutes but might take longer.

  11. Check Your Site.

    • After some time your SSL certificate will be issued and your site will be back online, running on our newer servers.

This will take a little bit of time as it will depend on your DNS host to propagate the DNS changes. Once you've successfully added the new DNS records, changed your domain to a Uscreen Subdomain, and then changed it back to your custom domain, your domain will verify and a new SSL certificate will be issued. This can usually take about 60 minutes, but sometimes longer.

Please make sure you do not skip step 2. If you do not switch to a Uscreen Subdomain and then add your custom domain again, our system will not successfully issue you a new SSL certificate.

No Downtime Migration Plan

How Do I Start the No Downtime Migration?

If you prefer to migrate your domain without any downtime, follow these steps:

  1. Contact Us

    • Email our support team at support@uscreen.tv and request to begin the no-downtime migration process for your domain. You can also interact with the message at the bottom right of this page to begin the process.

  2. Wait for Dashboard Instructions

    • Our support team will modify the banner on your Uscreen dashboard with specific instructions on how to complete the no-downtime migration.

Once you’ve received these updated instructions, you can safely proceed with the migration steps below.

What does this process entail?

This is a pretty standard process that entails adding a DNS record inside of your domain's DNS settings.

Warning: If you do not follow the steps provided in your dashboard as they are provided, you may experience downtime.

You will create a DNS Record with the following details:

Type

CNAME

Name

_acme-challenge.subdomain (or just use _acme-challenge if you do not use a subdomain in Uscreen)

Value

See Your Unique Value Provided Like the Example Below

TTL

60 (Your DNS manager may not allow you to set TTL. That is OK)

After you have created the record, it may take several hours for your DNS changes to propagate, this is normal and this time is not controlled by Uscreen, but rather your DNS Provider. Please be patient with this step. This may take 48 hours or even more.

You can periodically try the "Validate" button until your confirmation is successful. As always with any DNS changes, it takes time and we recommend you double and triple check your records to make sure there are no mistakes or typos.

Once your domain is confirmed, you can move to the next step, creating a CNAME and an A Record.

After you've created the new DNS records listed in your dashboard, click on Check my DNS. If successful, your domain will be completed and migrated to our new servers!

If there's an issue with your DNS records, you'll want to doublecheck them and make sure they're correct.

Frequently Asked Questions

What if I don't manage my DNS?

If you do not manage your DNS records we recommend connecting with the teammate who does. You should work with them on creating the necessary DNS records.

Can Support Help Me?

Our support team can help, though please do know that our team is unable to access your DNS settings for you. We also cannot speed up the process. Rest assured that your site will not experience downtime during this process, but that it will take hours to complete.

What happens if I do not migrate my domain?

Your site will remain vulnerable. While you shouldn’t feel as though this is an emergency, we strongly advise you to take immediate action. On December 1st, we’ll decommission our old servers. If you haven’t migrated before then, your custom domain will be removed from your store, and you’ll be assigned a Uscreen Subdomain instead. To avoid any domain-related issues, please take action as soon as possible.

I am getting an error message that says A-Record is not set

If you're doing the quick migration method and see an error that states the A-Record is not set, this could be from a couple of different reasons

  • You need to allow more time for propagation to occur. This is dependant on your DNS host. Please contact your DNS host to inquire about why the record is not propagating after a few hours of this error.

  • You have conflicting A-records that are preventing our system from detecting your A-record. Be sure that you have removed the old A-record as well.
