Roku Platform Search
Updated over 2 months ago

Roku Platform Search lets you members, and prospective members, search with the default Roku search, and see results for your videos! it even prompts them to download the app! In other words, this Roku search, outside of your app, shows videos inside your app.

For example, maybe your members want to search for a beginner yoga video, or painting videos about forests. They can now use the Roku Platform Search to see results!

This is really helpful because it exposes your app to new members. And it saves time for existing members, to search and find what they want, without launching your app.

How to set up

Roku requires a rating and genre, so your content appears in their platform search.

If you already have a Roku app...

  2. Select "I want to change images and/or branding" as roku search is realted to branding and keywords

  3. Select a rating and genre

  4. Submit app update request

  5. Uscreen will handle the rest! It will take some time to update your app, and for Roku to approve.

If you are setting up your Roku App for the first time

  2. Select a rating and genre in the keywords section

  3. Submit

  4. Uscreen will handle the rest! It will take some time to update your app, and for Roku to approve.

How to select a rating

Roku requires you to select a content rating, so search results appear accordingly. This list may look strange, depending on your country. But do not worry. In the background, Uscreen selects the equivalent rating, for various locales and countries. Select the best option based on your content.

  • TVG - ages 0+

  • TVPG - ages 7+

  • TV14 - ages 14+

  • TVMA - ages 17+ or anything for adults only, like R, X, etc.

How to select a genre

Roku requires you to select a genre rating, so search results appear accordingly. You may select 1 or more from the list of options.

How it works

Uscreen must update your app to apply new Roku Platform Search information, and to for Roku to have your most recent content library. After the app update and approval, search updates to typically take 24 hours to be propagated in Roku Search.

Roku Platform Search uses the Title and Descriptions for searching. Roku returns just a few items in search results. Roku has a huge library of content, across many thousands of videos, channels, apps. So your videos may not show as results, especially for generic searches like “beginner yoga” or “kids music”. So where possible, use informative, and non-generic, titles and descriptions, for your video content, and encourage members to search with several terms.
