Watch History: Admin View

Monitor your members' viewing activity and uncover engagement insights from your Uscreen account

Updated today

What Is Watch History (Admin View)?

As an admin, you can view a detailed record of what any member has watched on your platform, including video titles, watch time, completion percentage, and when they last viewed each piece of content.

This data helps you understand individual engagement patterns, identify your most active members, and spot content that's resonating (or not).

โ„น๏ธ INFO: The admin view of Watch History shows all videos a member has ever watched, including videos that have since been unpublished or deleted. This is by design, where the admin view is a complete, unfiltered record for your reference.

Exporting Watch History Data

This process depends on whether you want to get specific data for one user or summarized data for multiple users.

To get data for individual videos:

  • From the People tab, select Export CSV from the top right and choose the Video Stats report

To get summarized data across all saved watch history:

  1. Navigate to Analytics > Content

  2. Click the Audience card

  3. Click the vertical ellipsis ( โ‹ฎ )

  4. Select Download to export the data

What's Included in Watch History

Each video entry in a member's Watch History shows:

  • Video Title

  • Timestamp of most recent view

  • Total Watch Time for each video

  • Completion Percentage for each video

  • Most Recent Location Watched for each video

๐Ÿ“ NOTE: The admin view includes all watched videos regardless of their current publish status. This means you may see videos that are no longer visible to the member on the storefront, because they have since been unpublished or deleted. This is expected behavior and not a bug.

How Watch History Is Tracked

  • Watch History data is delayed by up to 24 hours, so videos watched today may not appear until the day has completed

  • A video counts as "watched" after 10+ seconds of viewing

  • Only individual videos are recorded and not collections or bundles

  • Free previews and trailers are not included

  • Watch History covers the last 12 months only

  • Watch History syncs across all platforms, including web and OTT apps

โ„น๏ธ INFO: If a member watches a video while offline (via mobile apps), data will only appear after the device reconnects and syncs.

Casting via AirPlay or Chromecast

Watch History behavior differs depending on how a member is casting:

Method

Watch History

Streaks

AirPlay

โœ… Tracked normally

โœ… Tracked correctly

Chromecast

โš ๏ธ Should appear, but may be unreliable

โŒ Not tracked

When a member casts via AirPlay, their viewing progress is tracked correctly. The Watch History and streaks both record as expected.

When a member casts via Chromecast, their viewing progress does not count toward streaks and may not reliably appear in Watch History. This is a known limitation of how Chromecast handles playback events.

If a member reports missing Watch History entries and they were casting via Chromecast, this is the likely cause.

๐Ÿ’ก TIP: The workaround for Chromecast is to have the member play the video natively on the web or in the mobile app (not cast) for at least 10 seconds before or after casting, so the view is properly recorded.

Limitations & Accuracy

Watch History data is a helpful tool for monitoring engagement, but it is not a precise measurement. As analytics function within an uncontrolled environment (user devices, browsers, networks), some level of inaccuracy is unavoidable.

๐Ÿ“ NOTE: No engagement analytics system is 100% accurate, including those used by platforms other than Uscreen. Our team has taken steps and designed our system to provide data that is as accurate as possible.

Common causes of inaccuracy include:

  • Network delays on a user's device

  • Ad blockers or privacy tools installed in the browser

  • Users closing the browser tab or app abruptly

  • VPNs or firewalls interfering with data transmission

  • Offline viewing that hasn't synced yet

๐Ÿ’ก TIP: For the most accurate insights, cross-reference Watch History with Content Analytics and focus on viewing trends over time rather than individual data points.

Access Watch History via API

For automation or advanced use cases, you can retrieve Watch History data via the Uscreen API:

  • GET /analytics/videos/views

  • GET /analytics/videos/views/total_watch_time

Both endpoints allow you to specify a user, video, collection, or live event.

The views endpoint gives you granular details about which videos were viewed, by whom, and when. The total_watch_time endpoint, on the other hand, lets you get a total watch time amount for a particular user or piece of content.

โ„น๏ธ INFO: These API endpoints reflect the same 12-month retention window as other Watch History analytics.

FAQs

Can members see their own Watch History?

Yes, members can view their own Watch History on the storefront (web and mobile apps). However, their view only shows the currently published videos. If a video has been unpublished or deleted, it will not appear in the member's history, even if they watched it. ๐Ÿ”— Learn more about Watch History (Member View)

Why does a member's Watch History look different in the admin area vs. what they see on the storefront?

This is expected. The admin view shows all watched videos, including unpublished and deleted content. The member-facing storefront only shows videos that are currently published and accessible. If a member's watched videos have since been unpublished, their storefront history may appear empty, while the admin view still shows the full record.

Why is a video missing from a member's history?

It may have been watched over 12 months ago, or in a way that bypassed tracking (such as due to VPN use). Watch History data can also be delayed by up to 24 hours.

Can I see Watch History for free content?

Yes, as long as the content is played by a logged-in user and falls within the 12-month window.
