Order Bumps Overview

Turn bundle buyers into subscribers with a one-click trial offer at checkout

Order Bumps let you offer a free subscription trial to customers at the moment they purchase a bundle.

When a shopper checks out with a qualifying bundle, they see a simple opt-in toggle to start a subscription alongside their purchase, and no separate checkout flow is required.

📝 NOTE: Order Bumps is currently rolling out to a limited group of stores. The feature currently works on the web platform only, requires your store to use Stripe as its payment processor, and is supported on legacy checkout.

What Is an Order Bump?

An order bump is a subscription offer that appears automatically during a bundle checkout. Rather than asking customers to take a separate action later, the offer surfaces at the moment of purchase, when intent is highest, so bundle buyers can start a subscription trial in one step.

Order Bumps are different from Subscription Upsell.

Subscription Upsell prompts customers to upgrade from one subscription plan to a higher-tier plan during checkout.

ℹ️ INFO: Order Bumps add a subscription trial alongside a bundle purchase, turning a one-time buyer into an active subscriber in a single transaction.

How It Works for Your Customers

When a customer purchases a bundle that has a published order bump configured, they'll see a toggle during checkout. The toggle shows the subscription plan name, the free trial length, and the price they'll be charged when the trial ends.

The customer has two choices:

  • Leave the toggle on to add the subscription trial to their purchase. The bundle is charged as normal, and a free trial subscription starts on the same payment method.

  • Turn the toggle off to complete the bundle purchase only, without adding a subscription.

If the customer opts in, their bundle access and subscription trial both start immediately after checkout completes.

📝 NOTE: The order bump toggle only appears when the customer pays by credit or debit card. It is not shown when paying via PayPal, Apple Pay, or Google Pay.

Setting Up an Order Bump

You configure order bumps from the Marketing section of your admin.

  1. Navigate to Marketing > Order Bumps

  2. Click New Order Bump

  3. Select the Bundle (When buying) you want to pair with a subscription offer

  4. Select the Subscription Plan (Offer this bump) to offer as the bump

  5. Click Create

  6. In the popup that appears, click either:

    • Save as Draft: saves the order bump privately; it won't appear at checkout until activated

    • Activate: publishes the order bump so it goes live at checkout immediately

ℹ️ INFO: Drafts are saved privately and won't appear at checkout until you publish them. You can return to edit or unpublish an order bump at any time.

💡 TIP: Each bundle can have one active order bump at a time. If you want to swap the subscription plan paired with a bundle, remove the existing order bump and create a new one.

When the Toggle Appears

The order bump toggle is shown at checkout only when all of the following are true:

  • The bundle has a published order bump configured

  • The subscription plan in the bump has trial days set

  • The customer does not already have an active subscription on your store

  • The bundle's currency matches the subscription plan's currency

  • The customer is paying by credit or debit card (not a digital wallet)

  • The bundle checkout requires payment (final price is greater than zero), or the customer has a saved payment method on file that can fund the trial

If any of these conditions aren't met, the toggle is hidden, and the checkout proceeds as a standard bundle purchase.

📝 NOTE: The toggle can appear initially, before checkout has resolved the final price or before a payment method is entered, and this is expected. Once the price resolves to zero (e.g., a 100% coupon is applied, or a Freebie bundle) and no saved payment method on file can fund the bundle and the subscription's post-trial charge, the toggle disappears.

FAQs

Can I have more than one order bump per bundle?

Each bundle can have one active order bump at a time. You can pair different subscription plans with different bundles, but a single bundle supports only one bump offer at once.

Which subscription plans can I use as a bump offer?

Only subscription plans with a trial period configured are eligible as bump offers. Both Private and Public plans can be used, and there's no billing-interval restriction.

Does the order bump appear on mobile or TV app checkouts?

No. Order Bumps are currently available on the web platform only.

Will the toggle appear if I apply a 100% discount coupon or use a freebie bundle?

The toggle can appear initially, then disappear once the price resolves to zero, for example, right after a 100% coupon is applied, or for a Freebie bundle.
