What is DRM?
Your content is one of your most valuable assets. But once a video is downloaded or screen recorded without your permission, it can be shared freely outside your platform, outside your control, and without any revenue coming back to you. Getting stolen content taken down is time-consuming, expensive, and never guaranteed.
Digital Rights Management (DRM) adds a robust layer of security to your video content, protecting it against unauthorized access, screen recording, downloading, and distribution.
Uscreen's DRM uses industry-standard encryption protocols to ensure that only your authorized members can view your content. This is the same technology used by the world's largest streaming platforms, built directly into Uscreen.
📝 NOTE: DRM is a relatively new feature and still considered a Beta. There may be occasional playback issues in some situations. Please be sure to review the device requirements and limitations below.
📝 NOTE: DRM is available via add-on. To learn about pricing and get DRM added to your plan, contact our Sales team.
How DRM Works on Uscreen
Uscreen uses multi-DRM technology, supporting industry-standard encryption protocols across all major platforms and devices (Apple, Google, Roku, Fire TV, etc.)
When DRM is enabled for your store, your video content is encrypted during the upload and processing stage. Each time a member plays a video, a secure license request is made to verify they have authorized access before playback begins.
ℹ️ INFO: DRM must first be enabled for your store at the account level (see How to Request DRM). Once enabled, you can turn DRM on or off for individual on-demand videos and individual live events.
Enabling DRM for Individual Videos
Once DRM is enabled for your store, you can control DRM protection on a per-video basis, so you can keep free previews open while your paid content stays protected.
To toggle DRM on a video:
Navigate to Content > Videos
Select the video you want to update
Find the DRM card in the video details panel
Check Enable DRM to protect the video, or uncheck it to disable protection
A green shield icon appears in the video header when a video is DRM-protected. Disabling DRM on a video will prompt a confirmation before it takes effect.
📝 NOTE: If you don't see the DRM card on a video, either the video is still processing, or DRM hasn't been enabled for your store yet. Contact our Sales team to get started.
Enabling DRM on Previously Uploaded (Legacy) Videos
If a video was uploaded before DRM was enabled on your store, turning on DRM will automatically re-encode it in the background:
A "Re-encoding for DRM" status appears next to the checkbox
Before re-encoding starts, you'll be asked to confirm; this gives you a chance to cancel if you don't want to wait
The video stays fully playable during this process
Re-encoding can take anywhere from a few minutes to a few hours depending on file size
Once complete, the checkbox updates automatically and the video becomes DRM-protected
ℹ️ INFO: If a video can't be automatically re-encoded (for example, if no backup copy is available in rare cases), you'll see an error and need to re-upload the video manually to enable DRM.

Enabling DRM for Individual Live Events
Once DRM is enabled for your store, you can control DRM protection on a per-event basis. This means you can choose which live events are protected without needing to contact support.
To toggle DRM on a live event:
Navigate to Content > Live Streaming
Select the live event you want to update
Find the DRM Protection card in the event details panel
Click Edit and follow the prompt to enable or disable protection
📝 NOTE: If you don't see the DRM card on a live event, DRM may not yet be enabled for your store. Contact our Sales team to get started.
What Content Does DRM Protect?
DRM protection applies to:
✅ Newly uploaded VOD (Video on Demand) content
✅ Previously uploaded VOD (Video on Demand) content
✅ Live events, including 24-hour live events
✅ Both free and subscription-gated videos
✅ Videos where offline viewing is supported
DRM protection does not apply to:
❌ Video trailers
❌ Community user-generated content (UGC)
❌ Zoom-based content
❌ Custom HLS streams not hosted through Uscreen
DRM protection is applied automatically during the upload and processing stage for all newly uploaded content.
For existing videos, you have two options:
Enable DRM one at a time from each video's details page; see Enabling DRM for Individual Videos below.
Protect your entire existing catalog at once; reach out to our Sales team at sales@uscreen.tv if you'd rather have your whole library protected in bulk instead of toggling videos individually.

A member cannot play a DRM video. What do I check?
Ask them to work through these in order.
Does their browser allow protected content? Brave, Firefox, DuckDuckGo, Opera, and Amazon Silk can block protected video until the member allows it in the browser settings. Chrome, Safari, or the native app avoids this situation.
Is their browser up to date? Be sure to update to the latest. Some old Chrome and Edge versions cannot play protected videos. The component that plays protected video updates separately from the browser, so a new installation can fail for a few minutes even when the browser version is current. Ask them to close the browser completely, reopen it, wait a minute, and try again. If it still fails, they can open chrome://components (or edge://components), find Widevine Content Decryption Module, click Check for update, and reload the page.
Are they playing from inside a 3rd party app? A link tapped inside Instagram, Facebook, or a mail app opens a mini browser that cannot play protected video. Ask them to open Chrome or Safari and watch directly on your site.
Are they on a native mobile app? Or a native TV app? Ask them to update to the latest version from the app stores to ensure their version supports protected playback.
Are they trying to cast to a TV? See the casting section.
Has the page been open for a long time? Playback permission expires after a while. Ask them to reload the page.
Still having a playback issue? Contact Uscreen support with the member's device, operating system, browser, and what appears on screen.
Important Limitations
Please be aware of the following limitations when using DRM:
Not a guarantee against all piracy: DRM provides a strong layer of protection but does not prevent all forms of screen capture, particularly simulator-based methods.
Playback compatibility: Some older devices, outdated OS versions, corporate networks, or VPN environments may experience playback limitations with DRM-protected content.
Browser components outside our control: The component that plays protected video is maintained by the browser makers and the DRM provider, not by Uscreen. Occasionally a specific build is withdrawn for security reasons, and browsers still carrying it cannot play protected video until they update. Most browsers update this component automatically within minutes of first launch.
DRM card visibility: The DRM toggle only appears once DRM is enabled for your store. For videos, it only appears on videos that have finished processing.
Other Content Protection Features
While DRM provides the strongest level of content protection, Uscreen also offers several additional security features:
🔒 Transport Layer Security (TLS)
Encrypts all data transferred between your viewers and Uscreen servers using the TLS protocol, protecting login credentials and video streams.
👥 IP Concurrent Sessions Limit
Restricts the number of concurrent logins per IP address, preventing password sharing. You can define the maximum number of simultaneous sessions allowed.
🌍 Geo-Blocking
Ensures your content is only accessible in authorized regions. Set country-specific rules to limit access to videos, your website, or native apps.
🔗 Learn more about Geo-Blocking Options
🤖 reCAPTCHA
Detects and blocks bots on your site's login and checkout pages using Google's reCAPTCHA v3. Contact support to enable this for your storefront.
🔑 Token-Signed URLs
Prevents unauthorized downloading or embedding of your videos by using secure, time-limited playback links. Signed URLs include a security token that expires after a specific duration.
🔗 Learn more about the Security Settings
📝 NOTE: Tokenized URLs currently do not cover static MP4 downloads. You can request expanded coverage for this feature.
Additional Recommendations
To further protect your content, consider these tips:
Add a watermark to your videos to deter unauthorized redistribution
If your content is distributed without permission, submit a DMCA takedown request

Why can a member with an up-to-date browser still not play a protected video?
Why can a member with an up-to-date browser still not play a protected video?
Browsers play protected video through a separate component that updates on its own schedule. A recently installed or reinstalled Chrome or Edge can carry an older version of that component for a short time, and protected video will not start until it has updated. Closing and reopening the browser usually resolves it within a minute. If not, the member can open chrome://components (or edge://components), find Widevine Content Decryption Module, and click Check for update.
A member's video played earlier, but now the page shows nothing. What happened?
A member's video played earlier, but now the page shows nothing. What happened?
Playback permission for a page expires after a while. If a member leaves a video page open for a long time and comes back, the video will not start until they reload the page. This protects your content and does not affect their access.
